Throughout the year, students will be reading independently, in small groups, and as a whole class. We will cover current events in our non-fiction reading of Time For Kids Magazineas well as our textbooks and articles that support our curricular studies.

Students will also enjoy fictional reading with the many novels and short stories we will read together. During each novel, student groups will work on their fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills.

Students read independently with our Accelerated Reader program. Each student should be reading for a minimum of 30 minutes each night.

We will also be enjoying reading and performing short plays in class that celebrate great  fictional stories and also so non-fiction plays which coordinate with our study of the U.S. regions.

In our Houghton Mifflin math series, we will be covering a variety of math topics.  Some students will be advanced to a higher grade level text for math based on their test performance.  All other students are placed together at grade level for instruction (i.e. on level 3rd graders are placed in a 3rd grade text and on-level 4th graders are placed in a 4th grade text)

Throughout the year, the class will work on the three forms of writing (narrative, persuasive, and expository). Initially, we will review the format for each and then work to expand their writing skills. These skills will add depth and creativity to their writing.

Expository writing is assessed on the ISAT writing test in the spring.  Students will have greater amounts of practice in this format.

Every other week, students will do daily activities with the spelling words of the week from the Everyday Spelling textbook in order to prepare for their test. In the 2009-2010 school year we will cover the odd numbered lessons.  On the alternating weeks students will work in depth on challenging vocabulary words.

We will initially begin our studies with basic map skills and knowledge of landforms.  Throughout the remainder of the year, students will be focusing on the environment and landforms of the regions of the United States.

State reports will be completed in April and shared at Open House with families.

Cougar Character is our character education program. It encourages students to develop social skills that reflect good character. Our focus throughout the year will be on citizenship, goal setting, respect, positive relationships, service, and conflict resolution.
