READING Throughout the year, students will be reading independently, in small groups, and as a whole class. We will cover current events in our non-fiction reading of Time For Kids Magazine.
During the course of the year, students will also enjoy fictional and non-fictional reading with the many short stories and novels we will read together. During each story or novel, students will work on their fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills.
Students read independently with our Accelerated Reader program. Each student should be reading for a minimum of 30 minutes each night.

MATH Students may change classes for math instruction. Fifth grade math utilizes Houghton Mifflin and out-of-level math uses textbooks from McDougal-Littell.
Students will begin the year with a review of general concepts such as addition, subtractions, multiplication, fractions, and geometric shapes. They should have their multiplication facts memorized through 12x12.

WRITING Throughout the year, the class will work on the three forms of writing (narrative, persuasive, and expository). Initially, we will review the format for each and then work to expand their writing skills. These skills will add depth and creativity to their writing.
