First Grade Mission Statement: Our mission as first graders is to learn all the skills we need to be ready for second grade. We will listen, practice and help each other. We will respect others and ourselves. |

First Grade Reading: First grade is READING!!! This is where we spend a majority of our time, learning to read and loving it. · Monthly Reading Goal: Each student sets a monthly reading goal. At the end of the month we graph the number of books read onto an individualized computer program. This goal is to encourage independent reading. Here are some ways to help your child meet their goal: 1. Check their goal sheet each night and make sure you write down any books that you have read that day. 2. Encourage your child to read to a sibling, a grandparent, babysitter, friend, pet, stuffed animal, etc. 3. Discuss connections to the books you read. 4. Ask your student questions to check for comprehension. · Model reading for your student. · Go to the bookstore or library often. · Practice your portable word wall to increase sight word banks.

|
Curriculum: Our first grade curriculum is aligned with the district learner statements which are based on the Illinois learning standards. Subjects we cover daily are reading, writing, math, science and social studies.
