SOAR

Students in grades 3-6 who do meet standards on the ISAT, ITBS, or the Scholastic Reading Inventory qualify for the SOAR program. Students meet with me four days a week for 40 minutes. This program uses reciprocal teaching to focus on four comprehension strategies - predict, clarify, summarize, and question. Reciprocal teaching gives students an opportunity to "be the teacher" by leading the discussion and modeling strategies for each other.

Mrs. Gehrke - Reading Specialist

My job is to oversee all of the reading intervention programs at Winston Campus. Trained program assistants work under my supervision. I teach the guided reading component of the SAIL program and lead all of the SOAR groups. Each year I also try to take a few of the one-on-one students. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I serve as a consultant for classroom teachers by providing information and materials related to the Harcourt reading series and best practices of teaching reading.

KIP

Students scoring in the lowest 7-10% district-wide on a literacy assessment qualify for the Kindergarten Intervention Program. Beginning in February, students work one-to-one with a trained program assistant for 15 minutes daily. Daily KIP sessions include instruction and activities in letter recognition, letter production, sounds, the relationship between sounds and letters, using letters/sounds to write sentences, sight words, and experiencing books.

FLIP

The First Grade Literacy Intervention Program begins near the beginning of the school year and is made available to students who score in the lowest 7-10% on a district-wide literacy assessment. Services are provided by trained program assistants under the direction of the reading specialist. Components in the daily 30 minute FLIP sessions include rereading previously read books, word study (sounds, word patterns), word bank (high-frequency words), reading a new book, and journal writing.

SAIL

Students scoring more than one year below grade level on an informal reading inventory and phonemic spelling test are eligible for the Second Grade Acceleration in Literacy Program. SAIL focuses on comprehension, fluency and word study. Students attend small group sessions twice a week for 40 minutes me. These sessions focus on word study and comprehension. In addition, students work one-on-one with a trained program assistant 30 minutes 2-3 times a week. The focus of these sessions is word study and fluency.
