WELCOME

Hello Parents and Students!
Welcome to my web page.  I am the ELL/ESL (English Language Learners/ English as a Second Language) teacher at Pleasant Hill School in Palatine, IL.  I provide English language support to students from kindergarten through sixth grade.  My students come from a variety of countries and cultures, but they all have the same goal which is to become fluent in English.

Program
The ELL/ESL program currently uses the ESL component of the Harcourt Reading Program for grades K-6. I also use the Into English Series, published by Hampton Brown for grades K-3 and Scott Foresman for grades 4-6.

ELL/ESL Goals
The goal of my program is to assist ESL students so that they become proficient in English both academically and socially. My focus is on vocabulary development, reading skills, and writing proficiency.  I also monitor their A.R. goals.

Homework
Occasionally students will have homework  based on our ESL lessons.  For academic success, I encourage my students to read in English for 15 minutes every day and to continue to reading in their native language

Testing
All ESL students will take the Wida ACCESS tests in January.  This test will assess the student's proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In March, students in grades 3 and 5 will take the IMAGE ( Illinois Measure of Annual Growth) test.
