Homework

A packet of homework will normally go home every Friday and is due the following Friday. Please assist your child where needed and let your child work independently when appropriate. Check over their work with your child as you are a perfect one-on-one tutor.

We are back on track starting this week. A homework packet is going home today reviewing the letter sounds w and z, practicing the word "am" and counting by 2's. This packet is due Friday, December 12th.

What We Are Studying

This month we are doing a month long unit focusing around the folktale The Gingerbread Man. We are reading many versions of this story to compare/contrast them. We are also practicing our retelling skills. This unit is filled with many gingerbread related activities and will conclude the day before winter break with our own Gingerbread Hunt around Pleasant Hill.

In small groups this week we practiced tallying, #'s to 20 or reading 2 digit #'s above 20, making AABB patterns, and doing writing assessments with Mrs. Kehm. Next week's small groups are very festive in nature and include making a "special project" (wink, wink.)

Some Books That We've Read Together

This week's gingerbread versions:

The Gingerbread Man by Brenda Parks

The Gingerbread Man by Karen Schmidt

The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth

F.Y.I.

...So far we have learned the sounds for s, a, t, i, p, n, c/k, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, ou, ie, ee, or, z, w, ng, and v in Jolly Phonics. Only 3 more consonants to go....

...We met with our buddies on Thursday to create "personalized gingerbread men". These will be hanging in our hallway.

...We have really made good choices as a class all week. Thanks for all the extra support at home. I know by us all working together we'll be able to make it to the holidays :) ! Yikes!

...Caps, hats, boots, mittens, jackets, gloves...we are practicing stuffing our belongings down our jacket sleeves, zipping, and bundling daily.

...Just a reminder that report cards went home Friday for grades 1-6. Kindergarten does not send reports home at this time. Our first report card goes home at the end of January.

Special Upcoming Dates:

December 17th Last day before winter break

How to Help at Home

...Read, read, read.

...Keep encouraging your child to bring back his/her library book and check out a new one.

...Take the time to read the comments I write on the papers coming home to your child. Have your child decide what his/her "best" work is and display it on the wall or refrigerator. By having your child self-evalutale him/herself, the child will get to know his/her talents and areas for growth. This is a higher level thinking skill that many are doing in the classroom already.

...Count socks or shoes to practice counting by twos.

...Play Bingo to practice reading numbers 1-75.

...See if your child can read and/or spell the words: a, is, my, the, I, like, and am.

...The Table Fairy visited Room 102 once again. Ask your child where his/her new seat is and who they sit by.

...Practice saying the days of the week and the months of the year. How many days in a week? How many months in a year?

Sight words introduced thus far: is, a, my, the, I, like, am
