As stated in Virginia Lake School Parent Handbook, the suggested homework time for first graders is 15-20 minutes, 2-3 times per week. In Room 129, students are asked to read each evening for 15 minutes, and study our spelling words. In addition, a short assignment, reinforcing concepts taught during the school day, will be sent home 2-3 times per week.

We use a variety of methods to ensure that our classroom is a peaceful and respectful place for everyone. These methods include weekly class meetings, Character Counts, compliment board, My Job/Your Job Chart, and the stoplight.

We will be using the Harcourt reading series for first grade called "Trophies." This is a balanced approach to teaching reading that includes whole-group, small group, and individual reading; working with words (phonics); and writing. Each of these elements is included every day during our morning literacy block.
