Reading Intervention Programs

KIP: Kindergarten Intervention Program
The KIP program is a form of literacy support for selected kindergarten students during the second semester of the year.  Students work one-to-one with a trained tutor for 15 minutes daily, under the direction of the reading specialist.  The program emphasizes phonemic awareness, alphabet recognition, letter production, letter/sound relationships, concept of word, and supportive reading.

FLIP:  First Grade Intervention Program
The FLIP program emphasizes guided reading, word study and writing.  Selected first grade students receive one-to-one daily instruction with a trained tutor, under the direction of the reading specialist.  The sessions last for thirty minutes and are in addition to the regular classroom reading instruction.

SAIL:  Second Grade Acceleration in Literacy
The SAIL program emphasizes guided reading, fluency, and word study.  Selected
second grade students receive small group instruction for forty minutes, twice each week, with the reading specialist.  Additionally, trained tutors provide one-on-one instruction for thirty minutes, two or three times each week. SAIL is provided in addition to students' regular, classroom balanced literacy instruction.

Soar to Success
Soar to Success is a small-group reading intervention program for selected students in grades 3-6.  The reading specialist meets with students four times each week for 45 minutes per session.  Authentic children's literature, reciprocal teaching, and graphic organizers are used in fast paced lessons that focus on strategies to accelerate the learning of intermediate level students.  All sessions are provided in addition to students' regular, classroom balanced literacy instruction.

Reading Advantage
The Reading Advantage program is used with students in grades 5 and 6, who have already been in Soar to Success for two years.  Students meet with the reading specialist 2-3 times each week for 40 minutes sessions.  This small group intervention program uses primarily nonfiction text to develop essential reading comprehension skills and strategies, and build fluency.  Reading Advantage sessions are provided in addition to students' regular, classroom balanced literacy instruction.
