Welcome to Kindergarten! Welcome to Room 129! Our classroom will be very busy and active this year. I am looking forward to the beginning of our school year and striving towards our goal of learning to read! My students are very active participants in their learning and will love to learn!
Reading/Writing This year District 15 has adopted a new reading program. We are using Harcourt Brace, in addition to Jolly Phonics. Harcourt Brace incorporates many different aspects of reading, writing, and phonics. With this program we use Big Books and other forms of quality literature. Jolly Phonics introduces 43 sounds to the children. Writing begins with the development of phonemic awareness. We will do this by learning to write upper and lower case letters first. I will be modeling the sounds orally to the children. Eventually, these sounds will begin to form words. By the end of the year, students will be able to write sentences!
Math This year we will use the Houghton Mifflin math series. Math will also be taught in small groups using hands on activities. Students will count from 0-115, be able to recognize and name the coins penny, nickel, dime, quarter and will learn about temperature. These are only a few of the many topics we will cover this year in kindergarten.
Science/Social Studies In kindergarten the science units that we will be learning are From Seed to Plant, Investigating Water, and Air and Weather. Our main topics that we will be learning in Social Studies are families, maps, and famous people.
About Myself This is my second year teaching kindergarten at Willow Bend School. I am very excited to begin another school year! I received my master's degree in Early Childhood from Roosevelt University. My undergraduate degree is from the Unversity of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Commuicative Disorders. I enjoy reading and traveling in the summertime.
Homework Reading to your child is the homework in kindergarten. Reading is a great way to spend time with your child. Children love to listen to stories read to them. By the end of the school year, your child will want to read to you!
