Text Box: We want to welcome you and your child to third grade! It is going to be a great and exciting year! There are a lot of new things that we do in third grade. Here are some of the routines that you can expect to see.
What to Expect???
Homework
Every night students are expected to read independently for at least twenty minutes. In addition almost every night there will be math homework. Occasionally, there will be homework in other subject areas. Every day we will write in our assignment notebooks together in class. Please check with your child each night to see what they have written in their assignment notebook.
Tests and Quizzes
There will be content area tests at the end of most chapters or units in science, social studies, and math. Students will know at least two days before a test, and we will write this in our assignment notebooks together. Students will usually be given a study guide. Please help your child develop good study habits by helping them review their study guide, class notes, and vocabulary, and reread texts.
In reading, tests from the Harcourt Text Box: curriculum on the weekly anthology story and focus reading skills will be given on most Fridays. Students will read the story and practice certain reading skills throughout the week. Your child can take the textbook home to reread the story with you.
Independent Reading
Reading is a crucial part of third grade! Students will be doing lots of reading in school, both of fiction and information texts.
To help students continually grow and improve their independent reading skills, throughout the year, students should be reading at least 20 minutes every night.
Here are some websites for you to help your child choose a book that is at their level and/or interest.
