Welcome
Hello and welcome to Mrs. Petersen's classroom! We are happy to have you visit our web site and learn about our classroom.

Mission Statement
In room 207, our mission is to learn, have fun, make friends, and get ready for the world.  We will do that by listening, studying, being friendly, being responsible and having a positive attitude.  Our help will come from friends, family and the whole Hunting Ridge staff.

Rules
1.  Treat others the way you want to be treated.

2.  Use all supplies correctly.

3.  Pay attention, respectfully.

4.  Be prepared for learning.

5.  No talking in the hall.

Accelerated Reader

District 15 has adopted a program to encourage and improve reading performance. Students are tested on vocabulary to find an appropriate reading range at which the student is challenged, but can read independently. Through Accelerated Reader, students are given the opportunity to choose books in this range. After completing the book, students take a short quiz to check for comprehension. Our classroom expectation is that students pass two of these tests with 80% or better per month.  If your child chooses to read a book that is not an A.R.  book, that is fine, too!  Just have them write up a simple summary.  Also, if your child selects a book that is 200 pages or more, one book will be fine for that month.  Remember, the goal is to read every day!

Curriculum

Reading–A series of fiction and non-fiction readings, vocabulary, literary and comprehension skills, will be  emphasized. Strategies will be taught in independent, small group and large group settings.

Math-The district text series is from Houghton Mifflin math.

Social Studies-In fourth grade, we survey our great nation. We study the geographic, historical, and cultural elements of each region.

Science-Our units of study include Habitats, Nutrition, Electricity and Rocks and Minerals.  The Harcourt textbook is used as a supplemental resource to reinforce the learning standards. We will also have a short unit on Human Growth and Development. We incorporate curriculum from both the Foss and Delta Hands-On programs.

Spelling-Our spelling comes directly from our Harcourt reading series. Lesson pre-tests are done in class on Monday with all activities due on Thursday. Friday is our typical spelling test day.

Language-Language lessons are taught through Daily Oral Language lessons each morning and a wide variety of writing exercises throughout the year. At times, students will take a piece of personal writing and refine it past editing and into the final copy phase of the writing process.
