Mission Statement Our mission in Room 218 is to learn many new things, become better readers, work together, respect one another, make friends, work hard, and always do our best. We will accomplish this by paying attention, being respectful and helping others, carefully completing assignments and doing quality work to improve our lives.
Reading Harcourt is the exciting reading series this year. In this unique program, each student will read independently at his own level to strengthen his reading skills while staying within the same theme as the class. The program provides the opportunity for the students not only to work independently, but in small groups, as well as with the whole class. The main emphasis in third grade is to strengthen reading comprehension.
Writing The writing process is a very important part of the third grade curriculum. Personal Narrative, Expository, and Persuasive Writing are taught with particular emphasis on second order support and elaboration. Students learn the important elements in these three writing types. Also, sentence structure and development are taught. Students work to write six words per sentence in their essays with use of proper capitalization and punctuation. The students will learn transition words that will smoothly connect the flow and development of ideas while writing. Students are expected to write a well written essay.
