"This year we pledge to have a fantastic year.  We will be respectful of people's feelings and their property.  We will use our hands only for helping and sharing.  Listening to the teacher and others will be important to us.  We will always do the best we can do to show quality work.  We will be responsible for our own learning.  By following our pledge we will have an awesome year!"

Homework Helpers

  • *Homework assignments will be written in student planners
  • *Help your child find a quiet workspace for completing homework
  • *Help your child choose a good time for completing homework
  • *Stress quality work-checking work over, proper spelling, and neat writing (Work may be done on the computer when appropriate.)
  • *Check assignments over after they have been completed
  • *Read to and with your child
  • *Continue to work on basic math facts to help reach long-term memory

Weekly Evaluations
Weekly evaluations will come home each Friday. Enjoy sharing in your child's accomplishments for the week. Also, check out what is coming up for the next week!

Curriculum Overview

Reading
Students will learn a variety of reading strategies to help them with vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. A variety of fiction and non-fiction selections will be used from the Harcourt anthology as well as the Books for All Learners. Students will have additional independent reading time to choose AR books and books of interest.
Writing/Grammar
Students will write persuasive, narrative, and expository pieces using proper grammar skills. Poetry will also be a part of their writing experience.
Math
Second grade will focus on larger addition problems, subtraction problems with regrouping, time and money, fractions, geometry, and problem solving.  Multiplication will be introduced.
Social Studies
Social Studies this year will include a unit on map skills, government, families and communities, and the interactions and history of our country and world.

Science
The three main science units in second grade are Using Your Senses, States of Matter, and Plant and Animal Populations.
Technology
Students in second grade will use technology to gain information and create projects in all subject areas. Some of the programs they will use will include word processing, making charts and graphs, using the internet, learning to type, and hopefully powerpoint presentations.
