Curriculum
During the year the curriculum covers ancient civilizations including: Early Man, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece and Rome, Middle Ages and Renaissance. Harcourt reading series is being used. It is skills based and includes many high interest short stories. There are also many theme based chapter books. My class is also involved in reading Classic selections for book reports and writing projects and all are required to complete a minimum of one per month.

Forms and Purposes of Homework
The purpose of homework is to: 1. Reinforce, review and practice each subject, 2. Prepare for quizzes and tests, 3. Research and project work, 4. Writing practice, 5. Reading practice to increase comprehension, 6. completion of unfinished class work. Sixth graders can expect 30-60 minutes of homework per day. Weekend homework minimal, only reading novels, or at times working on long term projects which is assigned at least one month in
advance.

Personal Philosophy
My goals includes providing a safe, stimulating, fun learning climate where each student feels he/she is a productive and successful class citizen. Mutual respect is the basic theme that I emphasize in the class. No question is insignificant. Each student is encouraged to take a "risk" and give their input. Every child's opinion is valued. Persistence is my favorite of the 16 Intelligent Behaviors taught in District 15 and the class sees this modeled often.
