What's Up in Sixth Grade

What's Up?
We are having a great February! We had great Valentine's Day parties.  We especially want to thank our wonderful room moms for all their time and effort expended in preparing for them.
We are in the process of planning our spring fieldtrips.  We will let you know when our plans are finalized.  Congratulations to all the participants in the 2-ball contest.  Also good luck to all solo and ensemble chorus participants.

Math
We are presently working in  Unit 4.  This unit begins with a review of some fraction topics and leads into working with mixed numbers.  Function concepts and notation are reviewed, and the concept of a multiplicative inverse is introduced.  Students  practice finding probabilities and relate probabilities to fractions, decimals, and percents.  They will also review ratios, rates, and mean, median,  mode.

Reading
.We are currently in Theme 4, "Creative Solutions".  In this theme, the students will see how the various characters in the selections come up with creative solutions to various precarious situations.  We are continuing to work hard on our reading logs and book reports.  Stories include: "My Side of the Mountain", "fall Secrets", "Girls Think of Everything", "Do-It-Yourself Project", and "Catching the Fire: Phillip Simmons, Blacksmith".
