Reading
This year the students have been enjoying "Trophies" , our school's new reading curriculum by McGraw Hill. Students and teachers have taken a liking to the new reading curriculum for many reasons. Teachers and students enjoy the variety of text the reading curriculum has to offer. The children have read biographies and autobiographies. They especially enjoyed reading about Roberto Clemente and Sammy Sosa. They have also enjoyed reading realistic fiction and historical fiction. As a matter of fact they recently read an excerpt from Island of the Blue Dolphins. Many of the children were so taken with the excerpt in their reading book that they immediately went to the library and checked out the chapter book. Many stories from "Trophies" tie in nicely with our thematic unit. The Stone Age News, informational text in the form of newspaper articles, was an excellent springboard into our unit Exploring the Past. Reading skills and strategies are introduced with each new story and the students have a chance to apply these skills when reading short independent readers at the end of each week.
