TEACHER-DIRECTED AREA PRIORITIES
Since the computer station and the independent reading station focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling, the teacher-directed area should concentrate on developing/improving writing skills. There is a variety of writing plans that incorporate the READ 180 program's curriculum. Examples of these plans are as follows:

  • Reader Response Units
  • Summaries of Read 180 novels
  • Expository essay on READ 180 CD or segment on CD, or book
  • Narrative essay on students' favorite READ 180 CD, segment on CD, or book
Persuasive essay convincing the teacher to watch a certain video on a CD or to read a book that he/she found engaging

WHAT WE, AS TEACHERS, HAVE LEARNED
Just a few of the many pieces of substantive information acquired are as follows:

  • There is always more to learn.
  • Management skills are a must.
  • READ 180 creates independent readers.
  • Relaxed, casual atomosphere creates an environment conducive for learning.
  • Technology is a motivator!!!
  • Objective teaching of the computer is a plus.
  • Koality tools, such as Plus/Delta, work well to ascertain student preferences and concerns.
  • Computer knowledge of the program is extremely helpful in running a successful program.

GOALS:

SOLVING PROBLEMS:

  • Watch and listen to videos on CD's.
  • Read written information on CD's.
  • Answer questons correctly.
  • Read along with and listen to books read by teacher.
  • Convey ideas through written and oral communication.
  • Edit and revise written work.
  • Apply word analysis and vocabulary skills to comprehend selection.

COMMUNICATING:

  • Oral expression using correct pronunciation and fluency.
  • Written expression using correct spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph organization.
  • Write for a broad range of audiences: narrative, persuasive, expository.
  • Convey feelings toward reading materials through literature response units.
  • Listen to teacher readings and directions and respond appropriately in an oral and written manner.

USING TECHNOLOGY:

  • Students use computers, CD's, microphones, and headphones designed for use in the READ 180 station of the program.

WORKING ON TEAMS:

  • Program design includes three groups with five students in each group.
  • Students function individually and as a team within the groups.

MAKING CONNECTIONS:

  • Students orally read and respond to information received on computer, in the independent reading station, and in the teacher-directed station.
  • Students are able to write their responses to information learned on computers, reading, and teacher-directed stations.
