Take the 5th Grade Challenge          with Mrs. Zeivel

Mission Statement
We, the students and teacher of Room 212, will take this opportunity to learn as much as we can and to take new challenges. By doing this, we will become as powerful as we can be.

We value:

  • teamwork
  • quality work
  • friendship
  • fun.

We will accomplish this by:
  • teamwork: working and playing together, sharing ideas, paying attention to each other, and getting along.
  • quality work: taking time with our work so that it is well-thought out and the best we can do.
  • friendship: being loyal, respectful, trusting, and caring.
  • fun: learning with projects, games, and challenges with laughter and interest.

Science
Science is exciting in Room 212. We have been studying the forces of the earth, such as magnetism, gravitation, and friction. Even baseball is full of forces at work! When Mrs. Zeivel thought "we knew enough" we went out on the playground to put our knowledge to work. We went on the swings, slides, and played tetherball analyzing them with new eyes. We realized that when we jumped off a swing that it was Newton's 3rd law of motion: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We sounded brilliant! Now we are designing cars, trying to apply what we have learned. "And they're off!"

Homework
Mrs. Zeivel is "Cooking Up A Challenge!" Each month when students complete their homework we celebrate by cooking together. Students learn the real-life uses of fractions and the importance of following exact directions. They learn cooking vocabulary and how teamwork can produce something delicious. Over the course of the year, we make cookies, homemade pizza, ice cream and much more. "Here's to another month of HOMEWORK!"

Social Studies
This year we are gaining a new appreciation of America by studying American history. We started the year by doing a project on an American landmark, such as the Statue of Liberty. We set up our research paper and picture of our landmark on our desk and then we went to "visit" all of our classmates' landmarks. We had patriotic music in the background and even got to see Old Faithful letting off steam on the internet webcam. Now that we know what we, as Americans, treasure, we are going back to the days of the explorers to see exactly how our country was "born."
